Answering Questions

Whew am I tired!! Who knew getting back in the swing of things would be sooooooo exhausting!! I must apologize to a blog reader of mine.....other than my mom, this girl has been the other person to leave a comment and I LOVE hearing what you guys think.....well I got so busy with finals that I just couldn't reply then Christmas came and everything since then has been a blur. Soooooo, Ash I am sorry and here are the answers to your questions! :)

I was wondering if you had any tips for me on preparing to go to vet school? All I can tell you is get as many VET HOURS as you can......I got paid for my position, luckily, but some of my fellow classmates did not. It sucks to have to volunteer but you do what you have to do to get into the place you have always dreamed of. My grades were nothing spectacular but I you have to have AT LEAST a 3.0 GPA to get into most veterinary schools. At some schools you have to take the "GRE" At Mississippi State they didn't look at these scores. Looking back now I think it would have been helpful to take Latin.....I know they say its a dead language but most of the medical terms for Vet Schools as well as Medical Schools come from Latin. Just a thought. When you do your hours make sure you have several different fields you've worked in. For example a vet school is more likely to take a student that has done small animal as well as some large animal on the side or vice versa. Its okay if you only have small but you GREATLY increase your chances of getting in my having large animal experience as well because there are not that many large animal vets out there and they want someone with experience who may possibly go into that field.

What does an average day of vet school consist of?

HA, oh goodness. An average day of vet school.........At Mississippi State we get to class at 8a.m. and sit through four hours of different classes (IN THE SAME CLASSROOM) Then get a break for lunch and come back around 2:00 for a Lab of some kind. NO off days (except for Holidays) and NO picking your own schedule. It is very doable but you have to realize coming into it that after those hours you also have to study and stay on top of your material. It is a lot different from undergrad.

How did you prepare before you decided that this is what you wanted to do?

I didn't have to prepare anything because since I was a child I wanted to be a veterinarian. I got a little freaked out in undergrad when taking the Chemistry and Biology 101 classes and changed my major but quickly switched back after a semester. I went to Tri County Tech for two years in SC to save money then transferred to Clemson University for the last two years and got a BS in Animal Science......If you are going to get a BS in Animal Science you need to go to vet school because I am not sure of anything else that degree is good for. Ha. Well, I hope this answered some of your questions. If you have anymore let me know!

oh and if you do not have a college picked out yet I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND CLEMSON UNIVERSITY!!! Seriously I bleed Orange and Purple....love love love that awesome place!

For anyone else who reads this I am back to blogging so stay tuned!!! :) If any of my lovely Vet school friends would like to add their "2 cents" worth feel free to comment on this blog to Ash!
